The Autobiography of Isidor Straus

Straus Historical Society

The autobiography of Isidor Straus, written in 1911, was privately published by Isidor’s daughter, Sara Straus Hess in 1955 for members of the Straus family. It has been in the family’s possession since that time without change. This new edition is faithful to the original and includes new information about Isidor’s public service and philantrophic activites and completes the story from the point where he left off. Isidor and Ida’s decision not to get into a lifeboat has been widely recorded. Leaving the lifeboat to stay with her husband, Ida followed the Old Testament principle noted in the Book of Ruth. “Entreat me not to leave you … for where you go I will go …” The couple who had everything surrendered their lives to abide by principle and to affirm their loving and everlasting bond to one another.
