Description
This unique Lusitania Medal is an exact replica produced from a British copy. Quite common in 1915, now nearly ninety years later they are a sought-after collector’s item. After the shocking and tragic deaths of hundreds of innocents from the sinking Lusitania there was a sense of outrage in America and Great Britain but not enough for President Wilson to involve the United States into a European war. In an era when the German government issued medals for even insignificant events, this medal was designed by Karl Goetz, a German metalworker. The illustrations are a skeleton representing Death buying tickets from a Cunard agent on the reverse and a passenger ship sinking is on the obverse. The grotesque images were used by British officials who had thousands of medals struck and they were distributed to pressure America to enter the war by proving the callousness of “The Hun” who was responsible for the massacre of innocent women and children.
