When she was launched in 1952, the SS United States was a dream come true for naval architect William Francis Gibbs. One of his greatest achievements, the United States was the ultimate liner, combining speed, range, and safety with the capacity for rapid conversion to a troop carrier.
The superliner’s life is recounted from concept, construction, career and her departure from US waters prior to her return to Philadelphia. Narrated by veteran braodcaster Ed Herlihy, this video features interviews with those who built and sailed her and celebrity passengers including Princess Grace, Bob Hope, John Wayne, etc who bring to life the heyday of one of the world’s most elegant and famous passenger liners.
