Britannic would never escape from the shadow of her more notorious sister, Titanic. She was a masterpiece of marine technology but was never designed for the stage that sealed her fate. Launched on February 26, 1914, White Star announced Britannic would not enter service until the Spring of 1915 however she was requisitioned due to the outbreak of the Great War by the British Government that converted her to a hospital ship. She struck a mine in the Aegean Sea on November 21, 1916, and sank. Her life was brief. Nevertheless her fate and her importance as the last of the Olympic-class is well established from the first diving expedition in 1977 by Jacques Cousteau with THS’s President, Bill Tantum, to Dr. Ballard and recently by the History Channel; Britannic has a special place in history.
